Kalamazoo Cosmetic Dentist Contributes to AACD Conference and Give Back a Smile Program

Kalamazoo, MI — The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) is hosting its 28th Annual Scientific Session from May 2-5, 2012 at the Gaylord National in Washington, DC. In anticipation of the upcoming event, Dr. Brett Magnuson, a cosmetic dentist in Kalamazoo, has announced he will be lecturing at the conference and says he is looking forward to further engagement with the dental community. The annual meeting will feature a diverse itinerary of lectures, course workshops, live demonstrations, and educational activities to help attendees hone their skills and stay up-to-date in the field of cosmetic dentistry. Dr. Magnuson will be delivering a lecture on “Digital Photography for Dentists” as well as teaching two half-day “Hands-on Workshops” at the event. Dr. Magnuson, who also volunteers regularly in the AACD-sponsored Give Back a Smile program for helping restore the smiles of domestic violence survivors, says his commitments to the AACD are both rewarding and essential for his pursuit of the highest quality care for his patients.

At his Kalamazoo cosmetic dentistry practice, Dr. Magnuson focuses on a wide variety of procedures ranging from teeth whitening to dental implant restorations. Through opportunities like the AACD annual meeting and the Give Back a Smile program, he says his practice is able to not only stay on top of the latest advancements in techniques and technology, but also play an active role in bettering the community. Whether it be teaching a course on a cosmetic procedure like porcelain veneers or giving back to the community through restorative treatments such as dental implants, Dr. Magnuson says he is honored to be a part of the AACD’s efforts and hopes to continue to interact with the educational opportunities and the outreach efforts.

Launched in 1999, the Give Back a Smile foundation is designed to offer cosmetic restorations to the victims of domestic violence at no charge. Volunteer AACD dentists perform procedures such as porcelain veneers to help survivors re-establish normalcy and healing to their lives and their appearance. Dr. Magnuson says his practice’s ability to participate in the treatment of patients such as these is an experience he is most humbled and thankful to be a part of:

“Through the Give Back a Smile (GBAS) program, AACD members assist survivors by treating their dental injuries that were sustained from domestic violence, so that they may reclaim their smiles, their self-esteem, and, ultimately, their lives. Because more than 5 million people are affected by domestic violence every year in the United States and Canada, there is clearly a need for a program like GBAS to help survivors rejuvenate their lives through the caring hands of a local dentist.”

Regardless of their motives for coming to his practice, Dr. Magnuson says his goal is to treat each patient with the utmost respect and personalized treatment. He says involvement in the AACD and their subsidiary programs has equipped him with a multitude of tools for enhancing his patient care and helping patients feel confident in the appearance of their smile.

Cosmetic Dentist in Michigan Discusses Importance of AACD Accreditation

Accreditation from AACD Essential According to Kalamazoo Cosmetic Dentist

According to the most recent American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), the number of male patients undergoing a cosmetic dental procedure increased to 40% of the total patients in 2011 and the number of patients age 20 and under has grown by 12% since 2007. Michigan cosmetic dentist Dr. Brett Magnuson says with the popularity of cosmetic dentistry shifting to a younger, more balanced demographic, patients need to be aware of the importance of choosing a dentist with extensive experience, noteworthy credentials, and accreditation from the AACD.

At his center for cosmetic dentistry in Kalamazoo, MI, Dr. Brett Magnuson says he is seeing a growing popularity in cosmetic dental enhancements amongst younger patients. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) confirms his observations, reporting in its latest study that the number of patients age 20 and below has increased by 12% since 2007. The study also shows that males are undergoing more aesthetic procedures, with men rising to 40% of the total number of patients in 2011. Dr. Magnuson says as the younger population continues to seek cosmetic dentistry procedures such as porcelain veneers in Michigan, consulting with an accredited member of the AACD is essential for receiving the best results. He says the popularity of cosmetic procedures amongst a younger generation necessitates continued dedication to the advancement of dental techniques and technology, whether it be in cosmetic dentistry or a related field such as sedation dentistry in Michigan.

Dr. Magnuson says the accreditation process provides a thorough and calculable system for assessing the qualifications of dentists based on a written examination, clinical case submission, and an oral examination. As an AACD examiner, he administers oral examinations to dentists seeking accreditation from the AACD, evaluating case selection, diagnosis, and treatment planning. “The individuals involved are those seasoned examiners that have been involved with the clinical submissions. Typically this involves 6 examiners.”

Whether patients are seeking porcelain veneers or teeth whitening, Dr. Magnuson says all patients will benefit from systems of qualification and evaluation such as the AACD accreditation. He says patients should be sure to research a practice thoroughly before undergoing any procedure. Dr. Magnuson also adds that he is thankful for the opportunity to promote cosmetic dentistry and quality patient care through his participation as an AACD examiner. “It is a way of taking my years of experience and giving back to the academy as well as the profession.”

About The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Oral Examination

According to the AACD, there are two reasons for the oral examination on the way to accreditation with the organization. First, the oral exam allows the dentist to defend and verify past casework. Second, the exam provides the potential AACD member with the chance to demonstrate their treatment planning abilities. AACD oral examiners scrutinize each case and rely on their experience and expertise to ensure the new members of the organization continue to meet the highest cosmetic dentistry standards.

Dr. Magnuson will participate in the next round of oral examinations, scheduled to take place Friday, January 20, and Saturday, January 21, 2012.

I never realized there was such a thing as ‘oral discrimination’, but I’ve learned firsthand that doors open after cosmetic dentistry. Having had many problems with my teeth, I searched for the right cosmetic dentist before choosing Brett Magnuson. At our first meeting Dr. Magnuson gave me so many options I knew I was in skilled hands. We discussed the best course of action and it didn’t take me long to say ‘Go for it’. And let me tell you, what a difference my now beautiful smile has made in my life! Friends are amazed, my family astonished, and people tell me I look ten years younger. I never imagined a smile could open so many doors! But since Dr. Magnuson transformed my smile, I am living proof. Even complete strangers will say ‘You have the most beautiful smile’ or ‘You must have taken care of your teeth all your life’. Little do they know my smile is a direct result of Dr. Magnuson’s magnificent work. I can not thank you enough.

I want to thank you for the superb job you did with my front veneers. I had no idea that changing my entire smile could be so easy or look so natural. What has been most remarkable is how good I feel about myself now when I smile. Previously, I was aware that my teeth were crooked and yellow, and I felt embarrassed to smile. I tried to avoid opening my mouth when meeting people or having pictures taken of me. Everyone must have thought I was quite a serious person. No one seemed to know exactly what was different, but they could certainly see a big change: an open, frequent smile. I like to smile now. I no longer feel I have something to hide when I greet people. I have increased self-confidence based on an improved self-image. Because I smile more, people see me as happier and more approachable. I learned one of life’s little secrets: a smile usually begets another smile. I would urge you to encourage other patients to consider veneers. They have made a tremendous difference in my life.

I wanted to take a few moments to say thank you to you and your entire staff. Although I am still adjusting to my beautiful smile with my porcelain veneers, I am 100 percent happy with the work that has been done. I wanted to share with you that during the entire process I admired your skill and professionalism, and the way in which you and your staff work as a team. Thanks again and I can’t wait to do the rest.

I was never really happy with my teeth and their shape after a childhood accident left uneven edges and wearing enamel. Years of “wear and tear” took its toll and left my teeth worn down. I hated the thought of sacrificing good teeth and did not want the “chicklet” white Hollywood teeth that everyone knows are not real. So, I considered veneers.

Dr. Magnuson assured me that veneers would look and feel like natural teeth. I got exactly what I wanted and they look and feel so natural. I definitely smile a lot more. I’ve always felt good about myself, but this just enhances my face. I definitely know this procedure was worth the time and money.

Give Back a Smile with Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Magnuson

April 19th, 2011

At his Kalamazoo cosmetic dentistry practice, Dr. Brett Magnuson volunteers his time to the Give Back a Smile (GBAS) program in cooperation with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). The program heals the effects of domestic violence by providing free consultations and dental treatment to restore the smiles of domestic violence victims.

According to the American Psychological Association, nearly one in three adult women experience at least one domestic assault by a partner during adulthood[1], which translates into approximately 4 million American women who experience domestic violence during a 12-month period. As a dentist in Kalamazoo, MI, Brett Magnuson, DDS performs a spectrum of procedures designed to give his patients a fresh start in life. In cooperation with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), Dr. Magnuson dedicates his time and cosmetic dentistry expertise to the Give Back a Smile (GBAS) program, which provides free consultations and dental treatments for survivors of domestic violence.

The need is great for those affected by domestic violence, says Dr. Magnuson: “Through the Give Back a Smile program, AACD members like me assist those in need by treating any dental injuries sustained from domestic violence. The AACD and I remain dedicated to helping these patients reclaim their smiles, their self-esteem, and ultimately, their lives.”

About Give Back a Smile

Victims of domestic violence who have suffered dental injuries can contact GBAS toll-free at (800) 773-GBAS (4227), or visit www.givebackasmile.com for more information. Survivors of domestic violence must make an appointment with a counselor, domestic violence advocate, social worker, or therapist to complete the advocate section of the GBAS application. GBAS then reviews the application and turns it over to the dentists. If eligible, the AACD connects the survivor with a local GBAS volunteer who provides treatment at no charge to the recipient.
